thankful... for the rest of the days...

trust me, the thing i'm thankful for these days covers the rest. trust me.

i'm thankful for the lessons God is teaching me through the journey of having and now taking care of Reid.

the lesson of trust. this is the big mama of them all that God is so intricately weaving through every circumstance, begging the question 'do i really trust Him?' Him who created the heavens and the earth. who made this little boy inside me... knitting him in my womb. he knew what yesterday would bring and knows the day that He will call me home. and yet i worry and fret and mull over circumstance over circumstance in my mind. so this is what i am learning. if when i pray i say, i trust you God... with every ounce of faith in me, that's enough. he knows my heart, he knows when i'm wavering. but i believe the 'believing by faith & trusting' is a process... of where i have not nor do i think i will ever arrive at. but if i am trusting more in each situation... i think that's what he calling me to.

the lesson of asking and be willing to accept help. i think when we denounce all help what we are really saying is that we are too prideful to acknowledge we need help. pride can destroy us so easily and so in this latest season i am trying to ask for help and seek it out when i need it. do i want to admit this issue of pride, no... but right now help is the best thing i can get. i would be stupid, yes stupid to ignore it.

the lesson of choosing to see God's faithfulness. i think when you are in a circumstance with the future unknown, you think often of what is the worse case scenario. don't leave me alone here, others do this too, right?! but, i think especially during thanksgiving week to think about what God has done in our lives up to this point and how can i praise him right now for all of that instead of focusing on what I see Him waiting to do. God is always good... we just have to make the choice to see it.

these lessons, although difficult to swallow have brought me to today... this hour where i sit thinking about my present reality and i have the choice to trust God, to accept & ask for help & to see God's faithfulness. I can say on the sunny days all i want that i trust God but it's days like today that matters. my situation isn't even that HUGE but that doesn't mean it doesn't feel that way.

im choosing today, this week, this year to be thankful for the lessons God is teaching me... for in my reality He is ALL I NEED.
happy thanksgiving,
kg:)

thankful days 20 & 21.

day 20.

i'm thankful for texting. texting shouldn't be used for communicating all things... especially i'm sorrys, a long conversation, or a lame excuse. but, i think that texting is such a gift to be able to communicate with someone quickly... the other night I really needed some encouragement & a friend was right there texting me & totally did just that.

thankful for unlimited texting plans...

day 21.

i'm thankful for leggings. plain & simple. they're comfortable, they're cute, & as of right now they're fashionable. all great options for me right now when time spent on looking put together... let's face it is at a minimum. so, i know it's just a piece of clothing but hey, i thankful for them.:) (pictured from oldnavy.com)

what are the simple things you're thankful for today?

thankful days 18, 19, & 20.

thankful day 18.
thankful that carter has a brother.

i think, i hope, & i pray that these two boys will grow up to be best of friends & to love & serve the Lord. i am excited to see what life holds for them.

thankful for boys even though i'm a girly girl:)...

thankful day 19.
thankful to be home.

i love our home. yes, the place is cute (or i've decorated in a way that makes me think so;)) but it's the feel of our home. it's where memories have been made & where we spend a lot of our time. when we got home with reid it was like a euphoric feeling of... i've been waiting so long to show him this place. then carter showed up soon after and it was like he was finally right where he should be... yes there's a baby here now but it's home.

so yes, i like my three bedroom two and a half bath home but the concept of home is what i'm thankful for.

thankful for the comforts & joys of a place where we make memories & do life...

thankful day 20.
i am so thankful that reid gained weight.

yesterday when we were dismissed from the hospital he had lost 11% of his weight... not good.

as luke said yesterday, 'we're not used to this, carter is the kid that is always kind of 'busting out of stuff.' he's just got a solid build. on the other hand i think this is the first difference we're seeing in the two & it's quite alright.

but when we did the weight check at the doctor's office today... just before reid christened the office by pooping and peeing everywhere ... he gained one ounce. yep, just one but in the right direction people!

thankful for ounces...

thankful day 17.

today i am so thankful for God's Word.

yesterday was truly amazing. i couldn't have asked for a better little man born into this world. God had the whole thing planned out perfectly... including the fact that an hour and a half before my scheduled induction my water broke... i had so desired to go into labor on my own. see what I mean? God is good.

but, there was a point yesterday that I was in so much pain and so frustrated. if you have ever been with me on the first day of a big event in my life you know that i have a tendency of fainting. lame, yes. but funny none the less. well, that was happening. my poor nurse was more concerned about me admiring the new suite rather than making sure i made it out of the bathroom without fainting....

but, i have to say, and i know i've said this before that when you hide God's Word in your heart you have it wherever you go. A few months ago I read through the book of Isaiah making sure that I wanted that to be his middle name. there has been a verse that I come back to over and over:

Isaiah 26:3&4, "you keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."

that He did. knowing His Word & His promises is a powerful thing. it literally sustained me when no or encouragement could.

thankful for the Word,
kg:)

thankful 16.

thankful for the newest addition to our family!

reid isaiah macdonald.... entering our lives at 10:28 a.m.

weighing in at a whopping 7 pounds 2 ounces... and measuring 20 inches.

God is so so so so good!
Thankful:)

thankful day 15.

today i am thankful that this is the last day that i will be pregnant. at least until 2012. Luke and I have taken an oath that 2011 will not contain pregnancy for mrs. kristen macdonald. poor luke ;) has endured 3 years that contained some part of pregnancy. god bless this man.

yes, you can read my thoughts about pregnancy here. (a blog i wrote last week)

tomorrow starts a new season. every season has it's challenges and it's advantages. i'm going to try and choose the good in that season. i'm sure of one thing: it won't be dull... that would describe no season in our life:)

so, yeah take that pregnancy. i'm thankful for you and that i get the opportunity to carry babies... i don't take that privilege lightly. but, i'm also very over pregnancy and am excited for the next season.:)

thankful,
kg:)

thankful 14.

i'm thankful i found my watch. my little man hid it in my tub. oh boys;)
now on time again:)

thankful day 13.

i am thankful for titus 2 women in my life.

the passage says this:
"Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled."

I have many examples of this passage in my life and am so thankful for them. I was at a wedding shower today and the most amazing wedding devotional was given to the bride. It made me think, wow, i know a lot of women who are older who have built into me and that are currently building into me. For me it's the best way to learn from those i can visually see and think.. i want my life, my home, my children to be like that.

thankful,

thankful day 12.

i'm thankful for laughter.

Proverbs 17:22 says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."

When i think about this verse I think of people that laugh and are encouraging are the people that i want to fill my time with.

during pregnancy i get into regular laughing fits. the tears start flowing and i cannot stop. no one else may get what i am laughing about but it's something that i can't shake & i love it. because it refreshes me. it helps me get a grip- that whatever's bothering or burdening me suddenly seems so little.

laughter is good. indulge today. get a comic book, or call the funniest person you know. i think it's good for the soul, seriously.:)

thankful day 11.

today i am thankful for a great manicure. manicures have a way of cheering up the soul. men who read this blog, lest you think this is only for the ladies, a manicure can make the difference between a looking at your hands and saying he could never be my man to .... his hands are normal... shoot for normalcy.:)

anyways. i love manicures & pedicures. today a kind soul (a.k.a. my mother) treated me to one at a very nice salon. my hands feel blessed and myself refreshed. it's something that those 25 minutes does to you.

these are my two favorite local places for manicures... maybe a gift idea for the lovely lady on your list or maybe YOU need a pick me up. either way:

high end & cheaper but will totally do.

my hands are smiling,

thankful day 10.

that i've ummm... no, i haven't had the baby yet. still waiting. excited for the day when i can say i'm thankful i've birthed this little man. the patience meter has been strained the past few days but i'm [attempting, at least] to be thankful even in that.

today i'm thankful for my husband.
i know, i know you're probably like, 'here she goes again...' but truthfully i'm so thankful.

i'm thankful for the fact that we met when we were 14. (both going on 40, if you know us at all you know... this is just how we are, not necessarily maturity-wise but... well i guess you just have to know us)
i'm thankful that we broke up when we did.
i'm thankful that we grew up when we were apart.
i'm thankful we can tell stories about high school and laugh out loud because we totally remember the situations and the people involved and the things that were so dramatic and yet now are so petty.
i'm thankful that when luke knows what he wants he goes for it. like the time i came home for easter break when i was in college and how he told me that he loved he for real and that we would get married in june of 07. ok, luke. and he was right;)
i'm thankful that i transferred schools for him and lost 18 credits in doing so.
i'm thankful that he's a romantic and brings me flowers on random days.
i'm thankful that he's had and continues to have a role of parents who love one another.
i'm thankful that he tells me he loves me everyday.
i'm thankful that he is willing to say he's wrong and do better the next time. that he doesn't want me to have time to think about a fight because he just wants to solve it.
i'm thankful for his energy for work and that he is excited to go to his job everyday.
i'm thankful that on our hard days that he wants to wake up the next day and have a better day with me still as his wife.
i'm thankful that he puts up with me as a nine month pregnant mother and doesn't frown at my crazy requests for food and drinks.
i'm thankful that he's mine.

so today, why don't you thank your husband, or if you're not married your boyfriend or if you're not dating your dad. our world is so filled with gross attempts at husbands and fathers but if you've been blessed with a man (in your life) who cares today... thank him. i think it just might (;)) go a long way.

thankful:)

thankful day 8.

i am thankful for mondays.

when i worked mondays - they were both exhausting and productive. it was difficult to wake up when i was leaving on my husband's day off and especially hard to leave my little man and my husband for a season. so, i've seen mondays on their worst side & now i would say i've seen them on their best side.

we've established that we do something as a family on mondays. sometimes it's something as simple as a walk to the park or walking around the mall. other times it's driving to a museum or seeing an exhibit somewhere.

we've established that we do a few 'chores' on mondays but nothing extreme. today it was putting together our double stroller. a chore? yes. producing laugher? yes. it made for a good teamwork activity;)

we've established that naps are good and that we can't walk 'loudly' (yes, i have loud feet) around the house when someone's napping. no one's allowed to feel guilty for napping on mondays.

we've established that we have a meal out... usually lunch. this leads to maximum relaxation.

other than that our mondays are pretty open... lately i've had dr. appointments on mondays.. but that has been one more reason to look forward to them. i'm looking forward to introducing our new little one to our mondays.... they're a huge blessing.

i'm thankful for mondays:)

thankful day 7.

today i went to the city with my a couple of the senior girl leaders and a bunch of our senior girls and handed out burgers from mcd's, blankets they brought and bibles they brought to homeless around the city of chicago. i want no credit or glory for this. i simply want to tell you that it made me thankful for so many things... so many simple things.... big things too.

so ten things i realized i was thankful for this afternoon that i totally took for granted this morning.

1. i have a house.
2. i have clean clothes on my back.
3. i ate three meals today.
4. i have money in my purse.
5. i have a car to drive & gas to get places.
6. i have socks and shoes.
7. i have a bed to sleep in.
8. i have diapers for my son to wear and plenty to change him into.
9. i have more than one coat to wear when it gets cold & a scarf to go with each outfit.
10. i have a Bible to call my own and to read and a church to go to teach me about it. it is so significant because it gives me more hope than any of these first nine things.

the thing that kept coming to mind was a song we often sing before the offering at harvest...

we have nothing to give that didn't first come from your hands
we have nothing to offer you that you did not provide
every good perfect gift comes from your kind and gracious heart
and all we do is give back to you what always has been yours...

i have nothing that Christ didn't give me first. i hope my life can be an offering of these things back to him. i have far more than i need and i am so thankful. God is good.

abundantly blessed,
kg:)

thankful day 6/let there be light.

tonight i am thankful for light/power/that i live in the two thousands.

i had all morning to write this blog and didn't. no instead i was looking at birth announcements and christmas cards... might sound lame to you... to me, it's exciting.

ok, but back to the topic: power. i had our night perfectly planned out. after church i had a babysitter meeting me at home. luke was going to hop in another couple's car and i was going to meet them at the restaurant in which we had a coordinating reservation with. the babysitter called me to tell me she was a tad late but would be there soon and everything was going to work out perfect timing wise because i had run late too.....

until- i drove into my neighborhood and although my neighbors don't usually put their outdoor lights on all the lights were off in every house. the further into my neighborhood i drove, i realized that the darker it got. yeah know that feeling of not knowing how dark it is until you're in the dark?!

ok, so i pulled into my house and knew that i had left lights on because i hate coming home to a dark house and there was nothing but an emergency light on that we had outside. perfect [not] babysitter on her way, husband on way to restaurant with friends. go to get milk out of fridge as i let cool air out of the fridge. crap.

so we made do... luke headed home with the couple. i still had the babysitter come. carter was holding up ok in the midst of very little light. but, as we made our plans to get take out.. well i sent the babysitter home and as the men picked up the food the power came on. if you don't have kids yet you will realize when you have little ones that the 'going out' part of going out with a couple [the combination of getting a babysitter with going to the actual restaurant and not being at your home even if your child is sleeping upstairs is one of the bigger parts of the whole deal] so what did we do but find a back up plan for where to take carter and to end up going out to our original restaurant choice.

but, when i was home with my power out i was like... this totally stinks. i like candles a lot. i love the way yankee candle has taken them into a new realm of possibilities but their light compared to my electricity... well, let's be serious... they're simply for ambiance. my poor child wanted to watch a show on tv... no electricity... i like that he likes a show and gets excited to watch it. i also like my fridge and my microwave and that they make my life easier.

wow... i think it's a good thing that i was born in the late 1900's because me and the 1800's or any earlier wouldn't have gotten along. the whole power/electricity thing and i really go well together.

so even though this morning i knew i was thankful for a lot of things, i didn't realize my appreciation for power. it is one great invention. thanks albert.:)

loving that i have lights and a computer and a tv on,

thankful day 4.

i am thankful that i get to be a stay at home mom.

carter is a blessing and a handful and there are times throughout the day (many on somedays and few on others) that i think, 'wow, going back to work would be much easier than this.' no less i would go back to teaching and think, 'wow, i wish i could go back to disciplining carter and knocking down towers with him.' i promised myself that when i chose not to go back to teaching that on the days when i really wanted a new outfit and knew that it would be smarter to stay away from the mall with just one income that the joys of motherhood far outweighed working. so, it's all about perspective and enjoying the moments with this child that God has entrusted to me.

soon i'll be at home with two little boys. crazy to think, but i'm really thankful.:)

today we literally stayed home and played with toys all morning... so on a day when i did just that... i'm thankful. now onto all the tasks at hand.....

thankful day 3.

verizon is very happy with me these days. i went over on my minutes this month so i owe them $50 in addition to my already substantial phone bill. and then i just upped my minutes so that i don't go over again so my bill will be $20 more than it used to be. but, i am choosing to look at this through the 'thankful' telescope....

i am thankful i have people to call.

i love to talk but a year ago i didn't have the same problem, in fact i don't think i've ever gone over my minutes. i honestly think i have a fear of not being able to get of the phone with people... let's just say what we need to say and then talk in person. one of my new year's resolution was to get better at communication... email, calling people back, etc. i'd say i've come along way... my verizon bill to prove it. sometimes it's the phone call that adds the touch... it goes a bit longer of the way than a text or an email... kind of like a piece of snail mail.

there was no greater joy on monday than to be able to call, text, and email loved ones and tell them our great news. so, yes verizon keep on loving me... in the mean time... i'll take full advantage of my new minutes.

thankfully chatty,
kg:)

thankful. day 1.

today i begin a post (Lord willing) that will lead to a daily post about thankfulness. some days it will just be a sentence, a word, maybe a picture, but today may as well be thanksgiving... it was just that good of a day.

six long weeks ago we found out that our baby was breech. he looked really healthy from the ultrasound but the fact that he was breech threw me for a loop. the questions began looming and continued for a few weeks. i told everyone i knew. i worried about it. i thought about the recovery of a c-section, a lot. i cried about it. i asked for prayer. and every morning the first thing in my prayer journal was asking for prayer regarding this subject.

then, it happened. it was a sleepless night that led to this post. some of you may have known that although i didn't explicitly state the fear i was talking about... this was it. i realized that if the rubber wasn't hitting the road in the reality that i was facing and the rubber being trusting God and the road being my life... then really could i trust God in anything. i didn't know it but that day led to a breakthrough moment... what would it mean if i really trusted God?! you never know when those moments will occur but this was one of them.

that day i was led in my normal bible study to this passage: matthew 21:18-22
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
"In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again!" And the fig tree withered at once. When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree wither at once?" And Jesus answered them, "Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith."

i'm not even kidding... these words [the bold ones] are still ringing in my ears.

week after week i would go to the doctor for my normal check up and there was no change. i felt discouraged but at the same time I knew for sure, without a doubt in my mind that God is still good regardless of how my situation turns out because ultimately God has my good in mind and knows what's best.

last week i was brought to tears by this song - look at the lyrics:

i was astounded because it totally spoke to what i was thinking... like so fearful but knowing that God knows best but knowing He would bring glory to himself somehow for this situation, etc. etc. the words speak for themselves... again the bolded ones..
God Moves In A Mysterious Way by Jeremy Riddle
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm

Deep in unsearchable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take
The clouds you so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings, in blessings
In blessings on your head

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust Him for His grace
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face

His purposes will ripen fast
Unfolding every hour
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain
God is His own interpreter
And He will make it plain

In His own time
In His own way...

and now to today... truly a 'memorial stone' for the macdonald family... luke and i were at the ultrasound together expecting that we would hear that he hadn't turned and trying to prepare our minds for the coming week. the ultrasound tech said, he was breech right? i said yes. she said well, he's not anymore. i LAUGHED OUT LOUD! I said, what?! she said, yeah, here's his head. tears were at the corners of my eyes and luke's response was... can i text people... we were both so excited!

so today i am thankful for a lot of things. mostly that my second baby boy turned around so i will hopefully be able to deliver him 'normally.' does that make the next two weeks a bit more chaotic? yes. does that make me thrilled... yes! today may as well be thanksgiving:)

thankful,
kg:)
